Nevervault field guides

Supported photo and video formats

Check Nevervault's recognized RAW, image and video extensions, plus the decoder and hardware requirements that affect whether a particular file can be indexed.

Mac requirements

Nevervault requires an Apple silicon Mac and macOS 14 or later. Intel Macs are not supported. Files must be readable from a local folder, connected drive, mounted network share or the app's optional Photos library integration.

RAW photographs

Recognized RAW extensions: 3FR, ARW, AXR, CR2, CR3, CRW, DCR, DNG, DXO, ERF, FFF, IIQ, MOS, MRW, NEF, NEFX, NRW, ORF, ORI, PEF, RAF, RAW, RW2, RWL, SR2, SRF and SRW.

These extensions identify files to try indexing. Preview extraction and decoding still depend on the camera variant and the file's contents. A new camera format, damaged file or unusual encoding may fail even if the extension is recognized. Try a small set from your camera before scanning a large archive.

Other still images

Recognized image extensions: JPG, JPEG, JPE, PNG, TIF, TIFF, HEIC, HEIF, HIF, HEICS, WEBP, AVIF, JXL, JP2, J2K, PSD, MPO, GIF and BMP. Successful decoding depends on the file and available image support. Indexing a Photoshop document does not mean Nevervault edits its layers.

Video containers

With Pro video indexing enabled, Nevervault recognizes MOV, MP4, M4V, BRAW, MXF, AVI, M2TS, MTS, TS, MPG, MPEG, 3GP, 3G2 and CINE. The video and audio codecs inside a container determine whether it can be decoded.

BRAW uses the bundled Blackmagic RAW decoder. Other professional containers can use the bundled media helper. Some footage needs a local playback proxy; the first playback can take longer while that proxy is generated.

Proprietary RAW video limits

Do not assume all camera RAW video is supported. R3D, CRM, NEV, ARI, ARX and ZRAW are not in the shipping enabled video set. Their proprietary decoders are separate from BRAW support.
